Are you among the few of us who’ve kept that January resolution? Most of us saw the new year as a fresh start – a chance to ditch old habits and present to the world a brand new you. That may sound fair enough, but when it comes to your brand, first impressions can be hard to undo.
“You never get a second chance to make a great first impression… Although these evaluations happen in an instant, they can last for years: first impressions are often indelible.” says keynote speaker and executive coach, Olivia Fox Cabane.
So how can you make sure to present a good first impression of your brand? The first step is a great logo. This is often the first thing your customers see of your brand and the way they will recognise and remember you. Visitors to websites spent on average 6.5 seconds looking at the logo area alone – amazing considering they most likely stay on the page for just 10-20 seconds.
A positive first impression increases satisfaction over a longer period of time. If users respond well to your website to begin with, they’re more likely to forgive any malfunction later on. But beware– the opposite is also true. Someone who receives a negative first impression is more likely to notice mistakes in the future. According to a Harvard University study, if a first impression is bad, it takes eight subsequent positive encounters to reverse the initial negative one.
All in all, first impressions are important. Make sure you get the chance to make one – your website must load quickly enough that people don’t get bored – and that you make it positive.
